House of Bishops

I have just listened to R4 Thought for the Day. More often than not its announcement jumps me out of bed to switch the radio off. Today was the Revd. Giles Fraser and he rightly ripped into last week's House of Bishops report on Civil Partnerships. His most telling comment that the church blesses warships but will not accept that people can choose to love each other and value person before gender. Despite Jesus clearly valuing person before gender and the whole idea of "One God in three persons, holy and blessed Trinity" getting on for being two thousand years old. This week I have encountered a dear friend who is very much exercised by this dinosaur like mentality. I know many broad minded ministers and I know others who would struggle to welcome a gay couple into church and communion. This is such a pathetic dispute but at its heart lies the idea of authority and whether a book tops the spirit. Jesus never promised a book but promised the Spirit. In my view whether you believe in a seven day creation and possibly even more importantly did pain enter the world before or after the fall will colour what you make of gay relationships. I am with Auden "Man faulted into consciousness". Are you with science or not? Genesis does matter. It is wrong, wrong scientifically (about creation and about death), wrong morally, wrong in its treatment of women. Unless you are willing to confront that and be clear, then the pain will continue and the Churches will be left to the fanatics who do not welcome people and are full of fear and judgement. Sad that when what the world needs is to know that grace and love can be tops. And that God could take responsibility by being incarnate of the Virgin Mary.

Gays in Russia

Russia is and always has been a great country. However at numerous points in its history it has been managed by what can only be called institutionalised thuggery. Now with a former KGB officer managing to adroitly maintain power, I fear the same process is at work and if it continues for decades it will threaten British interests. Support of the Assad regime is an example. Another index of institutionalised thuggery are attitudes to homosexuals. Hitler's Germany demonstrated this. So it is with considerable concern I read this http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-23901290 .

A New Year and the Church returns to that important matter of gay Bishops

From my facebook today:

Any good reasons why I should disagree with this one? http://archbishop-cranmer.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/homosexuality-is-issue-blown-out-of-all.html

  • Robert Forsythe Shall I translate? This is about sanity. A sane religion. What Rickard Hooker might have labelled Sweet Reasonableness. Cranmer is right, get your priorities right. I blogged about the Queen's five minute Xmas message. No mention of Leviticus, Paul or homosexuality. She said everything you needed to know about Christ and faith. She is after all Defender of the Faith. I reckon true Christianity is not a religion of the book, it is a religion of the Spirit. That is what according to the Bible Christ promised. People are sexual. That is creation. Therefore I ascribe it to God. Lying, bullying, non-consensual violence (sex is rough and wild), these are the real evils and not whether two men in a relationship which, God allows, gets the churches blessing enjoy oral sex, rubbersex on whatever. That is their affair. Called a private life. It is great the church is going to have gay bishops but asking them to be a celibate does seem foolish. As ever, as in so much of the 21st century, the broad debate is about modernisers v conservative, progressives v liberals. Yet if you follow me in detail you will realise I don't think it is about one side winning. It is about all people realising how they have to live with diverse views and still find a universal grace. The Queen knows that. After all she has much experience.

BTW There is a simple test for where you stand on this: is the Genesis account of creation history or a myth (along with its blame of women)? I absolutely definitely and totally plump for myth. For history I shall trust science, geology and evolution. To me that is sanity. Once you do that then your stand elsewhere will slot into place.

General Pitraeus

"Dubbed the warrior monk, he proved no monk at all". BBC R4 Today 0635. The subject General Pitraeus (or Betrayus - a word play not new but now made more apposite). The subject is sex and the divide is between ideals and pragmatics. I accept that the human is essentially a sexual and imaginative animal. I applaud diversity. But there has to be boundaries. If you lie to your partner or risk state secrets there will not be a happy outcome. It would be better if Pitraeus' wife (or Hilary C for that matter) had learnt to apply a chastity belt. The technology is readily available nowadays. Or if absent partners had managed their dalliances in a more straightforward way. Not for nothing does the phrase "camp follower" exist in history and our British military authorities in World War faciliated brothels. Now if you find this all distasteful, perhaps soldiers and others should not leave home for another's country in the first place? This little link well describes the ups and downs of such situations http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wagh_El-Birket .

Background to this.

License the sex trade

I have no idea what criminalising this woman achieves beyond selling more newspapers. Is it an alliance between prosecuting agencies and publishing groups that I should be worried about? http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/north-east-news/evening-chronicle-news//2012/10/24/wallsend-mum-led-double-life-as-a-brothel-madam-72703-32094083/?campaign=Newcastle_email_chronicleliveemail%3A20121024
"Mr Recorder Winn told her: “That is an offence which causes enormous distress and upset to those unfortunate enough to have to live beside them................But Recorder Winn said he accepted Loftus, from Rochdale Street, Wallsend, had never corrupted or threatened any of the women working in her brothels". So evidence the "enormous distress" and license the sex trade so that it takes place where neighbours consent and are not offended. I would be fine with that.
