Vienna: a note

Anyone who writes knows that what is published is the tip of an iceberg of what is written. This is true for me. Huge screeds of unwritten material surround us at home. A highlight in 2008 was an invitation to speak at a conference in Vienna, Austria in September. It led to the creation of an essay which after the usual round of submissions and rejections was forgotten about. "Beautiful piece, pity no-one reads essays any more" about sums up the reaction I got. Just this day I was stimulated by a call for papers for the next conference in this series from the IIID. Whether I get there again or not will be another story but it made me think I should upload the essay to the blog and see if any reaction followed.
